Why Do Holes Sometimes Appear in Wool or Cashmere After Cleaning?
A wool or cashmere sweater can appear intact before cleaning and show small holes afterward. One possible reason is that fibers were already weakened before the garment reached the cleaner.
Animal Fibers Can Be Vulnerable
Wool, cashmere, angora and mohair are protein-based animal fibers. Insect larvae can weaken yarns, and early damage can be difficult to see.
Why Cleaning Can Reveal Hidden Damage
If only part of a yarn has been weakened, remaining fibers may temporarily hold the area together. Normal movement during professional cleaning and finishing can make the weakened area separate enough for a hole to become visible.
Important: This does not mean every hole found after cleaning was pre-existing. Garment damage should be evaluated individually.
Protecting Wool and Cashmere
- Clean worn garments before seasonal storage.
- Inspect folds, cuffs and hidden areas.
- Store clean garments appropriately.
- Keep storage areas clean and inspect valuable pieces periodically.
